SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what’s the difference, and which one does your business need?

By Victor Chiquetti · · 7 min read

Short answer

SEO vs AEO vs GEO comes down to where you show up. SEO gets your pages ranked on Google and Bing. AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your content quoted as the answer in featured snippets, Google AI Overviews and voice assistants. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your business named when people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity for a recommendation. Most businesses need all three, in that order.

For twenty years, getting found online meant one thing: ranking on Google. That is still true, but it is no longer the whole story. Today a customer can find you in three places: the list of links, the answer box at the top of the page, and a conversation with an AI assistant that names two or three businesses and moves on.

Each of those places has its own rules, and that is where the three terms come from. Here is what each one means, how they differ, and where a small or mid-size business should start.

What is SEO?

SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of making your website rank in search results for the searches your customers make. For a local business, it also means ranking in the map pack, the three businesses Google shows on a map.

SEO covers four areas:

  • Technical health: a fast, mobile-friendly site that Google can crawl and index.
  • Content: a page for each service you sell and each area you serve.
  • Local signals: a complete Google Business Profile, reviews, and the same name, address and phone on every directory.
  • Authority: links and mentions from other trusted sites.

You measure SEO with rankings, clicks, calls and form leads in Google Search Console and Google Analytics.

What is AEO?

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of shaping your content so search engines can lift it and show it as the answer. That answer can be a featured snippet, a Google AI Overview, or what Siri or Alexa reads out loud.

Answer engines prefer content that is easy to quote. In practice, that means:

  • Pages built around one real question each, in the words customers use.
  • A direct answer in the first 40 to 60 words, with the details after.
  • Clear headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables.
  • An FAQ section marked up with structured data (schema), so machines know what is a question and what is the answer.

A simple test: if someone read only the first paragraph of your page, would they have their answer? If not, the page is not ready for AEO.

What is GEO?

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of getting AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot to mention and recommend your business. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, presented at the KDD 2024 conference.

In their tests, adding quotations, statistics and cited sources to a page raised its visibility inside AI-generated answers by up to 40%. That is a lab measure, not a traffic promise, but the direction is clear: AI tools favor content that is specific and backed by facts.

AI assistants also recommend businesses they can verify across the web. GEO work includes:

  • The same business facts everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp, BBB, LinkedIn and industry directories.
  • Recent, detailed reviews.
  • Mentions on sites the AI already trusts: local news, associations, partners and industry blogs.
  • Pages with real numbers, named sources and clear answers.
  • Access for AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot in your robots.txt file.

Why this matters now

The shift is already measurable:

  • Google says AI Overviews reach more than 2 billion people a month (Q2 2025 earnings call).
  • A Pew Research Center study found that when an AI summary appears, Google users click on a regular result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when there is no summary (July 2025).
  • In February 2024, Gartner predicted that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 as people move to AI chatbots and virtual agents. It is a forecast, not a measurement, but it shows where the market expected things to go.

Put together: people still search, but more of them stop at the answer. If your business is not in that answer, you never get the chance to compete on price, quality or service.

Analytics tools are catching up too. Google Analytics 4 now groups visits from AI assistants into their own channel, called AI Assistant, in its default channel report.

Which one does your business need?

All three, but in order. Think of them as floors of the same building.

  1. SEO is the foundation. AI answers are built from pages that search engines and AI crawlers can find and trust. If Google cannot find or rank your site, no answer engine will quote it.
  2. AEO makes your pages quotable. Once your pages rank, structure them so the answer is easy to lift: questions as headings, short direct answers, FAQs with schema.
  3. GEO makes your business recommendable. With the base in place, work on the signals AI tools use to decide who to name: consistent facts, reviews and mentions on trusted sites.

If you run a local service business

Start with your Google Business Profile, reviews and a page for each service and city. Add an FAQ to each page. Then make sure your name, phone and services match on every listing. That covers most of the ground for all three.

If you sell B2B or professional services

Your buyers ask longer questions and research for weeks. Publish pages that answer those questions with real numbers, case studies and named sources, and get mentioned in the places your buyers already read. That is where AEO and GEO pay off fastest.

If your business is new

Get the basics right first: a fast site, a complete Google Business Profile, your first reviews and consistent listings. Do not pay for “AI optimization” before your business can be found at all.

A 10-point checklist to start this month

  1. Check that Google, Bing and AI crawlers can reach your site (robots.txt and Google Search Console).
  2. Give your homepage one clear H1 that says what you do and where.
  3. Write one page per service, with a direct answer in the first paragraph.
  4. Add an FAQ with the questions customers really ask, marked up with FAQPage schema.
  5. Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema with your name, phone, area served and profiles.
  6. Complete your Google Business Profile: categories, services, hours and photos.
  7. Claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, and make every listing match.
  8. Ask every happy customer for a review, and answer every review.
  9. Put real numbers and named sources on your key pages.
  10. Pick ten questions your customers would ask an AI assistant, test them in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and write down who gets named. Repeat every month.

How we measure AI visibility at CW

There is no Search Console for ChatGPT yet. So for each client we keep a fixed list of prompts, such as “best HVAC company in College Park” or “who implements Zoho CRM in Orlando”, run them every month in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and record whether the business is mentioned, cited or linked, next to its competitors.

Together with Search Console, Google Analytics and the leads in the CRM, that shows whether the work is moving the business, not just the rankings. If you want the full picture of how we plan SEO, AEO and GEO together, see our SEO, AEO and GEO service.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

No, but they overlap. AEO is about being quoted as the answer in search features like featured snippets, Google AI Overviews and voice results. GEO is about being mentioned and recommended inside AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity. The same clear, well-structured content helps both.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. AI assistants build their answers from pages they can find and trust, and much of that discovery still depends on search engines. GEO without SEO is a house without a foundation.

Can I see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics?

In part. Google Analytics 4 shows visits that come from AI assistants such as ChatGPT as their own channel, called AI Assistant, in the default channel report. Mentions that do not lead to a click do not show up there, which is why we also test prompts every month.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

If your SEO base is solid, changes can show up a few weeks after you fix your listings and publish answer-ready pages. Starting from zero, expect three to six months, the same rhythm as SEO.
